You are so right.  I truly don't understand the motivation to create such a restrictive interface.  It reduces the usefulness of the PC to about that of a tablet.  Gnome 3 is a bit better than Unity mainly because most of what is there works, but as you said it is just not all there.

If you didn't get along with Ubuntu's Unity, I'm sure you're just going to <sarcasm>LOVE</sarcasm> Fedora 15, which comes out this week.

It's based on Gnome 3.  While it's possible to get something that looks a bit like Gnome 2, it's got missing functionality.
