I'm just going to see if I can read the disk and get the data first.  I
don't think he want to pay for the recovery.

As for dd, I have had better luck with dd-rescue. It has a more features
then dd.  I like reading the disk backwards to avoid a failed cache.

The first rule of the day; backup your data!

I like the 321 backup philosophy:
 3 copies of your data
 2 different types of media
 1 existing off-site.

I also check the data from time to time. It's just good house keeping.
