Thanks for your reply Andy.

Yeah I did set the http_proxy variable as per the instructions on the 
chrome unix/linux proxy page.  I still couldn't get through.  I did not 
however set the ftp_proxy.  Should that matter?  I was just trying to do 
some web browsing.
