I have compiled a copy of the Linux kernel from kernel.org and want to
use it instead of the kernel provided with my Fedora Core 12
installation. After executing "make install", I see that
/boot/grub/grub.conf has been updated. The following is the beginning
of this file:

default=1
timeout=0
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora (2.6.34)
 root (hd0,0)
 kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.34 ro root=/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root
LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us
rhgb quiet
 initrd /initramfs-2.6.34.img
title Fedora (2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686.PAE)
 root (hd0,0)
 kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686.PAE ro
root=/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root  LANG=en_US.UTF-8
SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us rhgb quiet
 initrd /initramfs-2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686.PAE.img

This data is followed with info for two previous fc12 kernel versions.
The .34 is my compiled version. The System.map and vmlinux links in the
/boot directory were changed to point to the .34 version.

When the system is rebooted, I am not given a screen to pick a kernel
version as I have on previous FC versions and the 12-115 version is
being loaded. I tried rem-ing out the hiddenmenu option but that did
not help.

Any idea why the old kernel is being loaded? Can I safely delete the
two older fc12 kernels on the PC and in grub.conf?
