Lawrence -

The "mount" is done in user space (no "root"). The mounted directories 
appear under your home directory in a (hidden) directory named ".gvfs" 
(which I believe stands for Gnome Virtual File System). See what this 
shows you (when you have a Windows share mounted):

ls  ~/.gvfs
