Thanks Eric.  This worked rather well.

I found detailed directions at:  http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/09/20/disable-touchpad-temporarily-when-typing/

I followed these directions and it worked exactly as advertised.  I  
can actually type emails now without having to "hunt and peck" to  
avoid the touchpad.
