You may want to consider Java as a means to teach OO programming, and
allow for cross-platform use.  Check out: http://bluej.org/ for a
teaching IDE.

I completely understand the value of FOSS, but the fact is that world
largely runs Microsoft.  That said, I recommend looking at C# using
Mono (http://www.mono-project.com/).

Lastly, CSS and Javascript is what I started with in college.
