Does Debian have kudzu? I don't know if that's a Red Hat only thing.
It caused me to get locked out of a VPS once because it reordered the
NIC's (so services were listening on eth0, which wasn't publicly
accessible, because it had been eth1 and part of a private network.)
Either way, you can't expect to manage a VPS entirely through ssh for
reasons you can now see. Most VPS have some sort of console you can
login to via a website.
