[wplug] Thunderbird blocks email

I have a friend who is [very] new to Linux. He has done a "default" 
install of Ubuntu 9.04. He loves it. However, Thunderbird blocks any 
email with an embedded web link. I've verified this by sending the same 
email from his house using my MacBook. Also he can send these 
problematic email if he uses a web based email client. He even did a 
clean re-install of Ubuntu but the problem persists. Any suggestions 
other than re-installing XP?   :-)
