Actually, the sound preference panel is present in GNOME 2.24 (Ubuntu
8.10). I can set the sounds for all sorts of fun things, logins, logouts,
new mail, buttons clicked, alerts, etc. It even has the ability for me to
set the sound for the system bell, it just doesn't work for the system
bell. It works for the other stuff, just not the system bell.
