I found the gnome configuration files and they do have the
authentication info. Perhaps I have another problem with NTP and the
weather icon.
I am still curious about where the terminal is getting the value for
http_proxy. I didn't set it in the .bashrc or any other file.

You can just create ~/.profile and put it in there or put it in
/etc/profile . In that regard, I'm pretty sure it does work just like
Red Hat.
