I don't think it's your machine at all.

I remember seeing this post a week or two ago.  Then just this morning I saw
the same thing
you describe on my work PC.  Firefox 3.0, Windows 2K, huge pipe to the
internet.

I'm thinking it may be something Googles side of things.
