In my experience, the one assumption you can make about the performance 
of Windows is this.  Whatever failings the various versions of Windows 
might have as an operating system or software platform, they are all 
generally superb at meeting Microsoft's marketing objectives.  
Manipulating the Master Boot Record to cripple Linux dual-boots seems to 
me a classic example.
