Thinking is an excellent habit.

One can't help but notice that inflation is ratcheting
out of control, and that the government is doing
everything possible to downplay this, by subtracting
out energy and food and housing costs wherever
possible. Why? Because government spending and
borrowing drives up the cost of everything. The
federal budget today is unbelievable; when you add
state and local governments, we pay an astonishing
129% more per household than in 1965.

No one who has stood in line at the DMV or the USPS
can claim that the government is a marvel of
efficiency - especially when you consider how fast the
price of a postage stamp has risen, and how the speed
of delivery and quality of service has declined.

Today, we are seeing the predictable end-game result:
rapidly rising inflation, a declining dollar compared
to other currencies, a credit crisis.

It is wise for all of us to resist new government
programs, and to encourage the replacement of old
programs with more efficient private-sector
alternatives. The role of non-profit organizations has
been usurped by much more expensive government
expenditures.

Pittsburghers remember the scandal when a non-profit
radio exec was drawing a huge salary; people stopped
sending money, and the radio station changed their
policies in response to their supporters.

Just try stopping your tax payments, and see how the
government responds. Do they cut salaries paid to
government bureacrats and cut corporate welfare, or do
they seize your bank accounts and paychecks? Having a
choice or not is the essential difference between a
free society and a police state.

What happened when the government-funded Lazarus
project failed? Did the government admit failure? No,
it threw still more money into a new shopping mall.
How's that going? Is it bringing in the rosy tax
revenues to justify the total expenditures for Lazarus
and the mall, not to mention the modestly successful
businesses which were forced out of that space?

Freedom is not given to us by the government; it is
something which we win and defend as our own by
constant struggle. Thinking is an excellent habit
indeed.
