As far as I recall, "z" is an unportable addition to tar by
GNU and *BSD but I don't remember ever seeing it in the SunOS
manual page.  Honestly, though, I've never actually tried to
figure out if it's an undocumented feature.  We have a few AIX
and Solaris machines (and I have a Solaris machine at home)
that I can try on.  :)
