Here's a tool you may find useful: <http://www.wikimatrix.org/>.

I'd use MediaWiki for a documentation project (especially an  
encyclopedic one), because it's the system with the most usage, and  
thus the best chance for both user base and admin familiarity.   
DokuWiki is a good lightweight alternative.

For general Intranet use, TWiki has excellent access control,  
subwikis, and collaboration tools, features which corporate people  
need to build their walled gardens.

If you intend to hack up your own custom system, UseModWiki is low- 
tech and small, and was the core from which several other wikis  
forked.  It's what the web group started with at RAND before the IT  
department came along with MediaWiki.

Ah, but if your company's stuck in a time warp it fits right in.  And  
you get to lean hard on CPAN.  (Admittedly, whether this is heaven or  
hell depends on personal taste.)
