When I checked with Verizon FIOS support because I couldn't get the
password to work to get into the router to reconfigure it, I was told
that any router would work and it wasn't even needed. It's a non-WiFi
router and support was surprised because they stopped giving those out a
long time ago (service was switched to FIOS as soon as it became
available). The FIOS Internet service seems OK, except their mailserver
seems to be blocked from some places and has problems delivering email
in a timely fashion (can take days in some cases or not at all in
others), but I use my own hosted servers for nearly everything so that
isn't a problem.

My big problem has been with the phones being switched over to fiber
from copper. Now I have a big ordeal trying to get back to copper so
alternative phone service can become an option. Verizon FIOS has their
business practices all messed up and can't sort out their phone billing
-- they've overcharged; haven't been able to make requested changes in
phone service being provided; promised at one point to knock $20 off the
bill for a couple years or more but never did.

I would advise everybody to insist upon staying with the copper for
phones. Verizon is not obligated to provide access for other providers
over fiber, only over copper. Their goal is to get people off copper
then pull it from the poles and remove all but wireless and coax cable
as competition. That isn't opensource or at lease it isn't open access.
