I'd say a small ITX based system would give you the most flexability.  It's
a regular computer so you can load whatever
OS you'd like.  For storage, you can grab a CF to IDE adapter on the
cheap.   Most of these systems you can even build fanless.

I actually have a spare ITX board with a 800mhz via C3 proc.  Mail me off
list if you want some details.
