You can get more diagnostics by removing the "quiet" and "splash"
boot options as described in
.

The "dmesg" command is probably the place you want to look for log
info, though /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages could also have
something useful.  If the system hangs early in the boot process,
it's possible the logs won't have anything relevant.

I'm not really a Ubuntu guy so these are generic suggestions.

Just a follow up on what I ended up doing.  Originally I bought this card because my motherboard would not recognize all 500 GB each of my two hard drives.   The card would freeze when installing Suse 10.3 on driver called hpata_3x20 (I believe).  I tried my other PC and the motherboard disk controller recognized all disks with correct sizes.  So I decided to use this PC instead as my fileserver.

P.S. HighPoint Tech support never contacted me back. So I don't recommend this card.
