Sound familiar and so were the results, failed to connect.

There is something that needs set to allow the system to access the net.

One way might to go is to run yum from the command line to install
yumex.  Then, use yum (from the command line) or yumex to handle your
updates.

 # yum install yumex
 # yum update

I don't know about the specifics of your problem, but that might be the
easiest solution.
