In my experience KDENLIVE works, but is pretty unstable.  I found that it 
enjoyed crashing quite a bit.  The features of it are pretty basic, nothing 
to write home about.  I found it be far behind the capabilities of both 
Windows Movie Maker and iMovie.

However, it wasn't difficult to get it up and running and redub some audio, 
add in a slide show, and then master to a DVD.
