You could also just make redundant copies of your data. Having 3 or more 
copies may still be inexpensive and you can plan on refreshing the data 
every 5 years or so onto new media. Yes, it could be a pain to do so.

I've chosen to put my 2+TB of data onto AIT-2 tape, which I trust to 
have greater shelf life than cheap DVDs. I plan to just migrate the data 
to new tape technology down the road as I acquire it.
