You could use rsync to sync your /home with an external drive and use
cron to automate it.  The first time it's run, rsync takes a while
because it copies everything, but after that, it just updates
whichever files changed.  There's also rdiff, which is similar to
rsync, but it keeps deltas of your files so you can restore to last
Friday's version, if necessary.
