Are you connecting over VGA or DVI?  It sounds like a pretty typical
problem for connecting via VGA.  On a dell monitor, go into the menu,
select image settings, then "auto adjust" (it may just be hidden).  On
my cheapo Dell VGA-only LCD here in the office, pressing the "+" button
does an auto-adjust.  Also, you may have luck playing with the phase and
pixel clock to move the image over.

If that fails, switch to DVI.

If you're using DVI, we'll need more information about what video driver
you're using to provide any help.
