I recently purchased the Ubuntu Linux manual (version 6.10) including the CD by Keir Thomas. The files transfer but will not open and the information to create a Boot disk doe's not work either. I have a feeling that Linux is not compatable with Macintosh. I will attend one of your meetings in Pgh. to see what the Ubuntu Linux system has to offer. Tom Cronin
Tom,
Actually, Greg is in charge of the Pittsburgh Coding Dojo, a group of
developers seeking to improve their programming and development skills.
For your issue, it sounds like you may be interested and find more help
at a Western Pennsylvania Linux Users Group event (WPLUG). We typically
hold one or two meetings a month, with our next meeting happening on
June 9th.
You mentioned that you were having problems getting Ubuntu 6.10 to load
onto your iMac G5 machine. This is the sort of problem that we are more
than happy to help with. In particular, you may find an installfest to
be an appropriate venue for getting started. Unfortunately, we just had
an installfest last weekend, and our next installfest won't be until
August, however that meeting could be perfect for you. We're going to
be walking people through the Ubuntu install process and then providing
a guide on how to do common tasks under Ubuntu Linux. Check
http://www.wplug.org/ for more information on this event.
In the mean time, please make sure that the CD included with Keir Thomas
book is for the PowerPC architecture. Most books only include the CD
for x86 (windows and newer macs), and don't include the CD for PPC
(older macs). However, Ubuntu does make a version for older macs. In
particular if you visit:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/feisty/release/
Then select "Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) desktop CD", you'll get
a CD Image of the newest version of Ubuntu that will work on an iMac G5.
Thanks!
