Yes, the kernel has to be compiled with CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y to use up to
4G, and with CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=y to use 4 to 64G.  On Debian, for
example, there are linux-image-NNN-bigmem flavors of kernels that are
pre-built with the latter option.
