Right, I agree that some things are cheaper due to both  globalism and
increases in technology. You can live without broadband and an iPOD,
you may feel your quality of life is not as good, but this is all
subjective to a certain degree. Someone making minimum wage, renting a
small apartment for example and struggling to pay their bills and
survive who now finds out they can't get to work thanks to cuts in the
Port Authority Transit will be affected much more seriously than a
relatively affluent middle class worker who owns their own home,
drives to work and must forgo a luxury item for a few weeks/months
longer than mormal due to rising energy costs are in very different
situations. I have been without net access for large chunks of time
sadly and I know how painful it can be :)
