I'd take Reagan over Carter any day. As many good books since have
demonstrated Reagan was not the sap the popular media portrayed him to
be. Reagan had a keen mind and genuinely thought through issues. In
this day of scorched earth politics and hyper partisanship it's so
much easier to trivialize and characterize complex figures to score
brownie points. This is tragic. Reagan was great friends with then
Democratic Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil. They could disagree
passionately yet still remain friends. I remember when debate was on
more gentlemanly terms and did no involve character assassination and
demonization. Defeating the Soviets without a shot fired isn't too
shabby. Also turned around the recession.
