[wplug] Help with Installing 500GB Western Digital Drive

There are hardware considerations also. It might be the newer drive requires more power and doesn't have enough to run, or there might be a cable connection problem. See if you can power from a different connector line on the power supply and make sure all the cables are connected properly. See if you can see the drive light or hear it clicking when the machine turns on. If it's an O/S software problem, can you just do a new install over it using the Ubantu DVD or CD?

I purchased a 1U server unit with an ASUS K8N-DRE Motherboard outfitted
with AMD Opteron Dual Processors. It came with two 80GB hard drives. I
installed ubuntu 64 bit server on one of the 80GB drives and tried to
replace the second 80GB drive with a Western Digital 500 GB SATA 300
Hard Drive. I am no expert in Linux and can't get the new drive
mounted. It appears to not be recognized properly by the BIOS.

My immediate question is - should I get another Brand of SATA drive?
Like the Maxtor that seems to work OK at 80GB? Or is the size the
problem - perhaps I should flash the BIOS from Version 1003 to 1005? (I
need to somehow mount a floppy drive and find a DOS system disk, which I
am working on now). Or - any other suggestions on where to direct
troubleshooting efforts? I pasted in below, the relevant information
which I have gathered so far.

Thanks,

Greg

Here is a summary of what I copied from the BIOS screen:

Looking at fstab, I see a connection for a floppy and a CD ROM (neither
of which came with the unit) and some sort of recognition of the WD (I
believe) as sda5 (During the book cycle I get an error message about the
4th master drive failing, press F1 to continue - the OS comes up fine).

greg at SHHubuntu:~$ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

Running DMESG to find the boot problems, here is the section where the
80Gb mounts successfully and the WD generates a bunch of errors (I can't
find error 62 - maybe it doesn't matter).

Other SATA devices?
