Er, that last bit should read "much of their Pavilion line has been Linux compatible."
Teaches me to type on my Blackberry, let alone when I've been up all night.

IBM just doesn't suppot Linux on their portables. They outsourced the entire PC operations long ago,
made a noble, but impossible attempt in 2001 to offer Linux as a standard on Thinpads,
and quickly dropped the program, including some choice words at the top that blamed Linux,
when it was their own choice in outsourced hardware and other selections.
IBM/Levono also has refused to re-license some of their Thinkpad firmware,
and their BIOS is non-compliant with various standards (e.g., Enhanced Int13h Disk Services).

HP has been selling a standard Linux workstation and portable line for years now,
and even much of their Linux has been Linux compatible for a long time, especially notebooks.

Chandan, best of luck to you. Bryan, great overview, but a tad harsh
on IBM/Lenovo, aren't you?

And yet, people run Linux on ThinkPads anyway, myself included. Here's
a resource for Linux on ThinkPads:
