[wplug] CUPS on Debian... pstoraster failing

Hello, list. This message finds me venturing into the 'final frontier' of
linux end-usability: printing.

I'm running up-to-date Debian etch. After a recent dist-upgrade I was
thrilled to find that a whole variety of tasks I had once thought
abandoned to Windows were suddenly working: audio from multiple sources
(and even multiple users) mixed in software; USB cameras automounting; SMB
network browsing; etc. All worked out of the box. I had similar hopes for
installing a USB printer, but they were dashed.

The printer installed just fine, and I can print a test page from the web
interface. However, when printing from userland I get the error
"Ready: /usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertohp failed"

After turning the error logging up several notches, my error log output
looks like:

D [27/Jan/2007:16:27:56 -0500] [Job 6] Wrote 1 pages...
D [27/Jan/2007:16:27:56 -0500] PID 20292 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops)
exited with no errors.

...snip

D [27/Jan/2007:16:27:56 -0500] [Job 6] ESP Ghostscript 815.03:
Unrecoverable error, exit code 1
E [27/Jan/2007:16:27:57 -0500] [Job 6] No pages found!
D [27/Jan/2007:16:27:57 -0500] Discarding unused printer-state-changed
event...
E [27/Jan/2007:16:27:57 -0500] PID 20293 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster)
stopped with status 1!
E [27/Jan/2007:16:27:57 -0500] PID 20294 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertohp)
stopped with status 1!

There is a pstops filter followed by a pstoraster filter, and then
rastertohp (which I presume is the last hop before going out to the HP
printer). pstops writes one page, but pstoraster says "No pages found!"

The cups forums have not elicited a solution.. I was wondering if anyone
here has a suggestion.

Thanks,
Brandon
