A hardware issue is possible - a fault in the wiring between the
mainboard and screen (I'm assuming this is a laptop) could
definitely cause an intermittent problem.  Experiencing similar
problems in Windows would tend to lend weight to this theory.

But if a simple reboot fixes things, though (being careful not to
move or jiggle anything), I'd lean more towards a driver issue.
Unfortunately, a problem that isn't repeatable tends to be really
hard to diagnose.
