I'm using ubuntu as the host for one of my servers,  I have three guests running on kqemu. 

the next time I rebuild the host system I will use Voyage Linux. Voyage Linux is build for flash devices.  The system boots a read only file system on flash. 
If you need to update the system, you remountrw  and add your software. When you are finished, you remountro to protect the flash. It's like a live-cd that feels like a real system.
