I beat this issue to death just today, and have my solution on the web:

This works for me, albeit on a system upgraded dapper-->edgy-->feisty.
One of these days I'll get around to doing a clean install and testing
these instructions -- but hopefully before too long VMWare will release
a less-eccentric build...
