Is this changing workspaces as in 'ctrl-alt-left' or 'ctrl-alt-right' in 
gnome?  I had that kind of problem too after I upgraded to X.org-- 
downgrading to the debian-stable xfree86 made the problem go away.  My 
graphics card is a Radeon, though..

Anyway, maybe it helps.
