I believe that you might have had the option to install X11.app during 
install, but it's probably got a package on the main install disk in a 
folder called "Other Installers" (or something like that).  It might 
already be on your iMac too -- check in your /Applications folder for a 
program called X11.

I don't believe you can download it off the web site anymore.

When I tried the Gimp on my Mac, it started X11 automatically.

X11 is a completely different display layer, that works with the OSX GUI 
when X11.app is running.  OSX is not based on X11.  Think of X11.app 
more like XWin32 running on top of Windows.  (Although, IMO, X11.app 
works a lot better with MacOSX).

PS: It's called an iMac.  When I see the term MAC I think of ethernet 
hardware.
