A couple of recovery tools were recently covered in an article at
<http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/08/21/1558230>, but I
don't have any experience with them.

If possible, it's a good idea to use dd or ddrescue to copy the
disk contents to another drive, then work on the copy.  That way,
you can experiment without wrecking things further.  :)
