I really can't help you with the other stuff, but this one has me
wondering -- are you talking about multiple users logged in via LTSP, or
via virutal terminals (if that is the right word, as it CTRL-ALT-F8 to
get to the next user)

If it is LTSP, then I can help.  If it is the other, then can't really
help.
