ok guys, i'm not sure whats going on here

my work machine has an install of FC4 and i'm trying to wipe it out
and install gentoo.

i can't do that until next week, but yesterday i got a new videocard
that FC can't configure to work with x, so i decided to do what i
normally do in this situation, boot a live cd running the same xserver
and copy over the xorg/xfree .conf. this is what i tried to do. i
couldn't get mepis to boot, the mepis grub screen comes up, where you
tell mepis what resolution to try, and where you can pass options to
the kernel.

once the kernel takes over, i get a succession of errors(which i never
get with mepis, on home pcs, it ALWAYS works flawlessly, i've
installed it probably 100 times by now):

(it hangs for awhile, it should be doing stuff by now)

makes me try to boot vesa . . .

You passed an undefined mode number

(then, after a while it continues)

ACPI: Unable to locate RSDP
(whatever that means)

(and then)
Looking for MEPIS Linux. . .................................
.........................................................................
.........................................................................
(in RED text)
Can't startup filesystem
Halting . . .

(now sometimes, it gets farther, and hangs at)

Mounting MEPIS filesystem . . .done.

(it hangs here for a long time until:)

a whole bunch of error messages and a kernel panic

unfortunately i can't seem to reproduce that one right now.

so, does anyone know whats going on here?

this machine is running phoenix bios 4 rev 6, and it has an
intel boot agent, PXE

that runs at startup.

now, i think its either something i don't know about the PXE, (this is
the first time ive ever had o deal with one) or there's something
going on in the bios that won't allow the live cd to write its
temporary filesystem.

oh, and knoppix exhibits the same behavior.

if someone knows the answer to this feel free to email me directly,
the sooner i have this figured out the better.

thanks
