[wplug] Viewing splash.lss

I've been trying to change the boot splash image of a linux distribution 
based on the following HOWTO:

One thing it does not mention is how to actually view a .lss file to see 
if you created it correctly.  I can't open it with GIMP or other similar 
image applications.

Anyone know how to view a .lss file?
