Hello,
Greetings from the USENIX Annual Technical Conference.
Jon "Maddog" Hall, former USENIX board member and President of Linux
International, told me about the fund to Establish the John Lions Chair in
Operating Systems at the University of South Wales.
The John Lions story is a very interesting one and I can not give it
justice but here is a quick summary for the impatient:
John Lions taught an Unix Systems class in the 1970's and wrote a text
book with verbose comments on early Unix code. Due to licensing, he was
unable to publish until very late in his life in ~2003. In memory of the
late John Lions the University of South Wales would like to hire a
professor who would teach Operating Systems from with an open source
methods.
Please support the fund one of two ways
1. Bid on Mr Maddog's ebay auction of the autographed copy of "Lions'
Commentary on Unix 6th Edition with Source code" by John Lions forward by
Dennis Ritche. The auction ends on June 11, 2006 6:00AM PST. Just go to
http://www.ebay.com and search for "Lions' Commentary"
2. Give cash to the Lions' Fund through Usenix. Credit cards via the
website and personal checks via usmail will be accepted.

Either way, your donation to the Lions fund will be matched by Usenix.
AND
It may be tax deductible since Usenix is a 501c(3).
This is your chance to contribute to the advancement of Open Source in
Computer Science. Please consider supporting the cause.
Thanks,
Beth Lynn Eicher.
