At present, analog devices seem to be given precedence to digital at BIOS 
initialization time.  Perhaps that will change soon when analog VGA joins 
the ranks of the floppy, the parallel port, UUCP, ISC Sendmail, etc.

Try booting the system with only the DVI connected, then connect the 
analog post-boot, see if that switches things up.

Btw, when you say "primary", you mean "screen 0" in terms of XFree 
nomenclature?
