Oh, and if you can use cron jobs, you could just have it run the
script every 10 minutes or so, and you wouldn't have to worry
about granting others permissions to your directory/files.

In that situation, you'd probably want to remove the echo
statements.  Maybe put something like 'echo "Restarted MUD program
on $(date)" >> $HOME/mudlogfile' after '$myprog &' to give you a
record of restarts.
