[wplug] Speaking of MIDI...SOLVED

Looks like you DO have to have a sound font installed.

I know I used find to search my Windows "crap" a gazillion times but this time 
I found 2 .SF2 files in the system32 directory.

I used sfxload to load in the 4MB samples and POOF - I got MIDI to play via 
the onboard synth.

I hope this helps somebody in the future.
