Western PA Linux Users Group will be hosting a General Users Meeting
(GUM) featuring Pearl the Robot. It will be held on this Saturday
January 21, 2006 from 10am to 2 pm  at Carnegie Mellon University,
Newell Simon Hall 1507. This meeting is free and open to the general
public.

GUM TOPIC: "Pearl the Robot"

Abstract:
In 10 years, there is expected to be a shortage of over 100,000 nurses in 
the US, with the greatest shortage in elder care. Pearl the Nursebot is 
being designed to help older adults live independently longer, and to help 
out in retirement communities, taking some load off the workers and 
allowing for a better quality of living. The Project on People and Robots, 
in the Carnegie Mellon Human-Computer Interaction Institute, is studying 
how robotics devices like Pearl can help. Specifically, the project 
studies how people anthropmorphize humanoid robots -- how people treat 
robots like humans in conversation and beliefs. The goals of the project 
include designing Pearl to better interact with people and communicate 
effectively with them. The talk will cover the Project on People and 
Robots and several of their experiments with Pearl, the Nursebot, and will 
include an interactive demo with Pearl. More information about the
