I guess the first question I would have is:
*) Does the box/postfix use libresolv resolver(3) or does it do its own
internal queries.
*) Does your system use some Solaris-like nscd(8) name service cache
daemon
*) Can postfix to be configured to exec libexec/smtp processes as
arguments to ktrace/strace so that you can trace gethostbyaddr(3)
calls.
*) Does tcpdump -n "port domain" even show DNS queries happening
