Can't you drop to single user mode and change the password?

Subject: [wplug] root password isn't working :(

Let's just say (Mandrake 9.2) that my root password isn't working.

I don't believe I ever changed it, it just doesn't seem to be working now.
No evidence anyone else has been in the box. But the /etc/shadow file
says it was last updated on 9/1.

I'm logged in the box as a regular user and I can log in as a regular
user, but I can't su to root.

Has this ever happened to anyone before? Has anyone been able to fix this
before?
