Bingo.

I got a really good feel for what did what, what needed what, the whole
shebang.  This paradigm, remember, is centered around my dinky little network
of five machines, where building everything from source is a small enough
enterprise to fit into one head and be executed in a single weekend.  I'd
*never* suggest that anyone maintain a shop with even a couple dozen machines
in this manner, especially if most were essentially identical.

I've given light thought to a rudimentary package management system, but I just
don't have the load to make it worthwhile...
