The #wplug irc channel is a good place for a lot of this off-topic 
converation (as well as *ON* topic conversations).  Here's a page on the 
WPLUG web page about it:  http://www.wplug.org/pages/irc

I've actually looked into Jabber (and XMPP, the IETF spec) servers, and 
never really found anything that I like that wasn't implemented in some 
really weird language.  But I think it'd be a pretty neat project.
