I've been burning CDs & DVDs left and right, and have started wondering.

Does any one know what actually _happens_ during the "fixate" stage?
I'm sure that many of you, like me, have noticed that fixating often
takes longer than actually burning (when the .iso is small).  I'm
curious about the actual mechanics - what is the drive actually doing
to the media during this phase?

Anyone know?
